Fuquay Varina is a small town located in the Pender County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 3,723 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fuquay Varina was founded in 1852 by Captain John Covington and his family from Kentucky as a station on the Catawba River. In 1951, Governor Roy Cooper signed legislation creating FuquayVarina High School which opened its doors in 1954. Fuquay Varina (pronounced "Foo-kuh-vah-nuh") is a town in Buncombe County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Fuquay Varina were Native American warriors who inhabited the area for centuries before European settlers arrived in what is now Buncombe County in 1738. They named their community after a small village on the Outer Banks of North Carolina that they had seen near their home territory. In 1763, Captain James Cook sailed by and named this coast "Varina" after his own sister, Lady Catherine Walker of Warrington, England. This name stuck and Fuquay Varina became one of several localities spelled "Fuquay" throughout much of its history. In 1819, following the Battle of New Bern against Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell, Union General Ambrose Burnside ordered all troops to leave Chapel Hill because it was considered an insurgent stronghold. Of the more than 30 towns within Johnston's army occupying Raleigh during this campaign, only two - Durham and Raleigh - remained open to occupation and function as garrison towns until AFTER THE WAR! Fuquay Varina was not among these captives and must have been deserted when most other communities capitulated or left for fear for their lives should Confederate forces return later that year with even greater power and numbers. In 1835 storekeeper Lorenzo Denton founded a school in what is now known as downtown FV which quickly became one of the largest schools district south of Baltimore/Washington DC due to its large enrollment base including many slaves brought over from Africa via boats traveling through Wilmington Harbor). The first public library opened in 1865 thanks to Dr John Sibley who donated materials from his farm land adjacent to today's library building located across from today's post office on Hwy 362 just off I-85 exit 190A northbound; he also funded construction of a stone jail next door that still stands today as part of FV Heritage Museum District parkLAND .
