The company was founded by two brothers named Harry and John D’Angelo in 1924. They started out making corrective lenses for soldiers in World War I. After the war, they began production of sunglasses and other types of optics for businesses and individuals. In 1951, Harry D’Angelo passed away but his sons continued to run the business until their deaths in 1984 and 1990 respectively. Today, FuquayVarina is a family-owned business with over 1,000 employees who continue to produce high-quality products that are used by millions of people around the world. Fuquay Varina is a small town located in Durham County, North Carolina. The population was 4,816 at the 2010 census. Fuquay Varina is part of the Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is home to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University. The town was founded in 1859 by Captain John Atwater, who named it for his wife, Fuquay Varina Atwater. Captain Atwater's father had been born in Guadalupe Parish, Louisiana and moved to Durham County when he was very young. He died here in 1857 and Captain Atwater took up the post of justice of the peace for this area. In 1881, Captain Atwater's son-in-law erected a two story brick schoolhouse on what is now Main Street. This school served as an elementary school until 1915 when it became a high school with students from all over Durham County attending its classes. The first dentist in FuquayVarina was Drs. JB White and CF Cobb in 1912 who established dental clinics in their office on Vance Avenue between McDermott Avenue and Willard Road which they continued until 1975 when they closed their business due to advanced age or lack of patients In 1946, Mrs Johnnie Matthews donated land north of Main Street (now Patton Boulevard) for a new high school which opened in 1951 as Fuquay High School- now known as UNC Chapel Hill High School In 1957, after much discussion by citizens committee chaired by Mrs Jane Matthews ( widow of Colonel Johnnie Matthews), it was decided that FuquayVarina would become an independent city separate from Durham County . In 1928, German scientist Wilhelm Röntgen invented the X-ray ray microscope, which allowed investigators to see through matter at a much higher resolution than ever before.
