Fuquay Varina, North Carolina, is a town located in Cumberland County, North Carolina. The population was 2,819 at the 2010 census. Fuquay Varina is one of the oldest towns in Cumberland County and was founded by English colonists in 1748. Fuquay Varina became a county seat in 1838 and remains so today. The original town plat is still on display at the courthouse. FuquayVarina's history can be traced back to its founding as an English colony in 1748 by a group of men from Plymouth Colony who were looking for new land to explore after their ship HMS Venerable had arrived with supplies and news of success at Jamestown in 1607. The original settlers were led by Captain John Smith who first landed on what is now known as Buxton Island on November 5, 1748. Smith named the island after his friend Lord William Godolphin who had helped finance his voyage to America. The settlement quickly grew when more ships arrived and soon there were over 100 people living here including 12 women and 14 children under the age of 10. After two years of construction work, Smith's small settlement was ready for occupancy on October 15, 1749 when he and his family set about building a chapel and storehouse called "New England" which stands to this day near where he first landed on Buxton Island. The initial settlers built their homes out oflogs that they harvested from the nearby tidal river which they used to ferry goods between the settlements. By early 1800s most of the original settlers had died or moved away leaving only a few hundred residents behind including many poor farmers who relied upon subsistence farming techniques that required long days paddling through difficult waterways filled with brambles and thorns during low tide times. In 1838 FuquayVarina became part of Cumberland County when it was created from parts of Dare Parish along with other adjacent counties following General Assembly legislation entitled "An Act To Provide For The organization And Government Of Cumberland County." At its creation, Cumberland County included all present-day westernmost portions of Johnston Parish excepting what is now easternmost Fairfield Parish including much of what are now Fayetteville Township (including much Currituck County) as well as all or nearly all present-day eastern portions of Brunswick Parish including much Brunswick County (including present-day Wilmington). fuqaya varina
The town of Fuquay Varina was founded in 1795 by Captain John Smith as a small fishing village on the banks of the Catawba River. In 1824, Fuquay Varina became the seat of a county, and in 1828 it was made an incorporated town. The population of FuquayVarina peaked at 1,500 in 1930 but declined to 600 by 1940. During World War II, many residents worked in the local munitions factories. After the war, the population increased rapidly due to postwar migration anddevelopment within the town itself. By 1990,FuquayVarina had grown to 615 residents.
