Fuquay Varina is a small town located in the Pender County, North Carolina region. The population was 1,401 at the 2010 census. It has a history dating back to 1835 when it was named for Colonel James Varina, an American Revolutionary War veteran and Governor of North Carolina. Fuquay Varina is located on the Yadkin River, approximately 30 miles east of Charlotte. The town's first occupants were settlers from Georgia who came in 1835 to purchase land near what is now known as Interstate 95. They built log cabins and hunted game that roamed free in the area. In 1837, a group of Englishmen settled in FuquayVarina after traveling through South America on their way to find new land grants. They brought with them their own culture and language which blended with that of the local Cape Fear natives. After some years, these English colonists were replaced by Germans who had come overland from Germany during the 1840s looking for new land grants. WhenFuquayVarinawasfounded,thecountycontained only about 10 people; most of whom lived along the riverbanks or worked on farms away from town. By 1860, however,FuquayVarina had developed into a small community with several shops and two churches-one Presbyterian and one Methodist-as well as a school and various other businesses including a tannery and millinery business. During Reconstruction era (1865-1879), FuquayVarinaagainbecameasmalltownwithseveral grocery stores, six churches (four Methodists and two Presbyterians), four schools (grades K-12), three hotels/motels (one each operated by KKK members and Confederate sympathizers) as well as six small businesses including a cooperatives store(now demolished), papermaking plant(now closed), Odd Fellows Masonic Lodge No 571(now defunct)and paint company.(closed in 1988). Most residents still spoke dialects of English which helped make life easier for those who grew up here before electricity arrived in 1957; prior to that period most homes were heated by wood fires ignited by burning logs left over from logging operations or cowrie shells used as flooring pieces inside households during early days of civilization when there was no indoor plumbing available outside of church pews! In recent years many residents have moved out of town due to economic reasons such as high taxes or lack thereof while others have chosen relocation within North Carolina because they feel more connected to their community here than anywhere else in the state.–Allison Gannon

Fuquay Varina is a town in the US state of North Carolina, located on the eastern shore of Currituck Sound. The population was 1,817 at the 2010 census. It was named for General Andrew Fuquay, an American Revolutionary War officer and general in the British Army who commanded a brigade during the Battle of Saratoga. In 1810, Captain John Smith's expedition explored and surveyed this part of North Carolina. He named it after General Fuquay because he had met him while serving with Commodore Thomas Hawkins's squadron off Long Island in 1794. In 1812, United States forces burned down what is now Varina stone factory to prevent Cherokee Indians from using it as their summer home. The name "Fuquay" continued to be used until 1827 when it was changed to its present form by Colonel James Moorehead and postmaster John Ashe as part of a campaign to improve postal service in this area. The first permanent settler arrived in what is now Fuquay Varina about 1800: Captain David Askew built a cabin on high ground overlooking Pemaquid Bayou. By 1804 there were nine families living here including Askew's son-in-law Samuel Smith who donated land to make way for a courthouse and schoolhouse which became known as First Presbyterian Church (later First Baptist Church). Because most residents worked onsmall farms or managed fishing boats or hunted game near Fort Cumberland (now Durham), there was little need for schools or other infrastructure until after Reconstruction when local citizens began building roads and schools throughout the town in an effort to promote education and better economic opportunities for their citizens. One early founder of FuquAYVarina - Capt David Cook - became one of America’s leading mapmakers during that time period helping delineate millions square miles across our country’s emerging Northwest Territory through his mapping expeditions both before and after annexation intothe United States by Canada in 1914 In 1865, Capt Cook married Miss Anna Broughton (daughterof Drury & Mrs Anna Bingham) setting off another layerof family history here that continues today!
