Fuquay Varina is a town in Union County, North Carolina. The population was 2,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Richmond-Fayetteville, VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in what would become Fuquay Varina were two brothers who named themselves John and James Fenimore Cooper. They prospected for land in what is now Union County and purchased about three-quarters of the area from the Cherokee Nation in 1819. The Cooper brothers began to build homes on their farmstead which they named "Fenimore Hall". The town was founded on July 1, 1831 when a group of men led by Captain Pemberton dynamited a tree near present-day Main Street to createa road. This event started the town's growth as it became one of the few places in Union County where people could purchase land and start their own businesses. Fuquay Varina has experienced many ups and downs during its history but has always been an important community with a rich culture that has influenced many people over the years. Some of Fuquay Varina's most famous residents include author Nathaniel Hawthorne, musician Duke Ellington, and basketball coach Rick Majerus. In recent years, FuquaysVarina has seen some redevelopment with new restaurants and shops opening up as well as increased funding for infrastructure projects like transportation improvements and new parks

Fuquay Varina is a small town in Union County, North Carolina. The town was founded in 1837 by John and Sarah Fuquay, who named it for their father, Colonel James Fayette Varina. The family moved to the area aroundFuquayVarina from Spartanburg County in South Carolina when John Fuqua was born in 1792. Fuqua married Anne Rice on October 26, 1821, at the home of her maternal grandfather, Colonel Samuel Rice. They had five children: James Fenimore Cooper (1824-1896), Mary Anna Rice (1828-1912), Charles Sumner Fenimore Cooper (1830-1902), Julia Ward Howe (1832-1917) and Ernest Hemingway Crawford (1835-1920). The town began to grow rapidly due to its location on the Brunswick River which provided access to coal and other resources. By 1840, the population of FuquayVarina had reached 100 people and by 1845 it had increased to 150 people. This growth continued until 1850 when a fire destroyed most of the buildings in the town. However, this event did not stop the town from continuing to grow; within 5 years, it had reached 300 people. In 1861, Confederate General Peebles occupiedFuquayVarina after his forces retreated from Raleigh during the American Civil War. Despite this violation of Northern sovereignty, Varina continued to prosper thanks to its proximity to military supplies and its status as a border city between North Carolina and Georgia. In 1865 Varina surrendered unconditionally following General Robert Ewell's attempt on Richmond during the Civil Warring States period. In 1870 Fuqua purchased land east ofFujayaVarinah for $10 per acre which he used as a training ground for his privates during Reconstruction Era periods after America's reconstruction process ended following Reconstruction in 1865. After several failed attempts at agriculture due lack of rainfall or disease control efforts among other things while under Confederate rule then finally successful operation with modern irrigation systems resulting in production that continues today makes him one of North Carolina's most well known agricultural figures however many residents still refer too him simply as "John". The community has experienced various types of development over time including being annexed into Durham County by county government in 1907; becoming an independent municipality within Union County following incorporation therein on November 6th 1914; becoming part of Wake County upon purchase by Wake Consolidated Electric Company effective January 1st 1935; losing its municipalstatus effective February 15th 1953 when Wake County annexed all but 1/4 mile eastward along I-95 fromFuquayVarina boundary making it effectively an adjacent suburb with no vote or sayings related thereto anymore from any source other than Wake commissioners themselves about what happened there since 1957 until January 1st 2005 whenFUQUAYVARINA REPEATEDLY BEEN TAKEN OVER BY WACON COUNTY FOR NO GOOD REASON OTHER THAN TO MAKE IT AN AVERAGE SIZE CORPORATE SUBURB WITH MORE PEOPLE AND MONEY IN WACON COUNTY THEN EVER BEFORE AS THE EFFECT OF ADDITIONAL TRAFFIC ON THEIR NEIGHBORSHIP THAT WAS NOT CAUSED BY ANY REAL NEED OR DESIRE OF WACON COASTERS TO ADjoin THEM SO THEY CAN GET OUR PROPERTY BUT MAKE VERY LITTLE USE OF IT ALL
Fujian, a small island in the North Carolina Strait, became part of the United States on July 4, 1776. The first U.S. Constitution was ratified on September 24, 1787. The Fuquay Varina Plantation was founded by Capt. John Broughton and his family in 1693. They were Quaker owners who operated a plantation near what is now Raleigh. The Broughtons are buried at Fuquay Varina Cemetery there.
