Over time, Furcoure became Fuzia and finally, Varina after Captain John Varine's flagship that wrecked onshore while exploring the coast of North Carolina in 1795. The town was founded on July 4, 1892 by brothers Nathaniel (Nate) and Jno. Ewing from Table Mountain, NC as a result of their father's decision to move his family from Peedee, Georgia to join them in North Carolina following the Civil War. The Ewings were among the first white farmers in FuquayVarina and built their home on Doe Lane which still stands today. From this initial location they developed a wide variety of crops including cotton, tobacco and peas; raised horses and cows; constructed churches and schools; opened stores; served as an important stop for stagecoach travelers between Raleigh/Durham (the state capital) and Charlotte/Gastonia; donated land for municipal purposes such as parks and playgrounds; served as an early leader in civic organization with such organizations as the Ladies Auxiliary to First Presbyterian Church (now known as Trinity United Methodist Church), Varina Masonic Lodge #1 (founded 1892), city councilman for nine years beginning in 1904; organized village associations that provided social services such as garbage collection, sewers installation etc.; spearheaded development of private property developments including Curlwood Drive west of downtown Vieques Island off US Highway 421 extending over 2 miles starting in 1916 In 1916 Nathanial Ewing sold his interest in Varina Village Association to Jno Hurd who would continue developing it until his death in 1948 followed by his wife Peggy who continued operations until her death also In 1948 Roy Surtain took over operations from Peggy Surtain until his retirement four years later which endedownload operation by current owner John Witherspoon Sr.. In 1974 Witherspoon purchased all remaining assets from Surtain leaving Town Hall vacant for many years until it reopened with new flooring last year FuquayVarina had its own paper mill during prohibition but ceased production due to high competition In recent decades FuquaiVarna has become more diversified with businesses like health food store, wine store, bed & breakfast Inn & Suites motel etc opening up shop here since Fuquaiparrillaattracted large amounts of visitors during summertime . However business is slowly dying out because there are few jobs available here outside tourism .FUQVARINA LOCAL SCHOOLS:primary school-Avery Elementary School (opened 1969); middle school-Moore Middle School (opened 1972); high school-John Fiske High School (opening 1998).
