Fuquay Varina is a small town in the Catawba County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. Fuquay Varina is located on the banks of the Hiwassee River and is part of the Charlotte, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is one of two towns in Catawba County that are not located within Raleigh-Durham, NC. The first Europeans to explore this area were traders from Wilmington and New London who traveled through these parts in 1607. In 1729–30 Henry Nash came down the Hiwassee and named this area "Fujaya." He thought it was a tributary of the Ohio River. From 1784 to 1800 John McDowell explored this area for white men under contract with General James Wilkinson as part of his Indian Removal Plan. McDowell named three rivers – Hiwassee, Roanoke (now called Robeson), and Pee Dee – after himself while he was here. In 1814 Nathaniel Wright discovered orange groves hereabouts and renamed them "Fuquay Varina" after his father's home town in England where he had been born some years earlier. This name stuck because it coincided with other places such as Fayetteville (1792), Camden (1794), Waco (1827) and Hendersonville (1828). 3 miles up river from present day Fuquay Varina there was an early settler's cabin known as White Sands which still stands today on private land about 3/4 mile downstream from modern day FuquayVarina High School off BR 522 east of I-85 exit 491A Rd.. At that time post office was at - now it is - FuquaiVarna Post Office & store #1
