Fuquay Varina is a small town located in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It is bordered by the Yadkin River to the east and the Tyrrells Creek to the west. The population was 5,236 at the 2000 census. The name Fuquay Varina comes from an English place name, Varnhambe, meaning "place where horses were bred." The first Europeans to visit Fuquay Varina were Philip Carteret and John Lawson in 1624. They discovered a ford over which they traveled for six days before reaching their destination. In 1728, Captain John Johnson sailed through this area on his way southward along the coast of North Carolina. He named this part of what is now known as NC after explorer James Fenton who had explored this region in 1727-29. In 1841, General James Longstreet decided to build a military post on some high ground overlooking NASFEEBRAKE CREEK which would provide him with an excellent view of Spanish Fort and its approaches on Hatteras Island. He named this post Fort White clay after General White's brigantine HMS Claymore which he captured during operations against Spanish forces at Florida Bay in December 1810. This fortifications served as long as there were no active hostilities between US troops and Spain; however, upon Mexican independence from Spain in 1821, US troops began garrisoning NASFEEBRAKE CREEK for defensive purposes only. As hostilities intensified between US troops and Mexico throughout 19th century, Fort White clay became increasingly vulnerable to attack by Mexican cavalry units raiding US lines of communication or patrolling NASFEEBRAKE CREEK itself searching for Allied supplies or soldiers retreating from battle before enemy reinforcements could arrive. In 1898 when Japan attacked US soil following America's entry into World War I, Admiral Chester Nimitz ordered Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter to deploy USS Pampanga (BB-38) under Commander Richardson's flag off NASFEEBRAKE CREEK with orders to blockade any Japanese ships attempting passage through NC waters north of latitude 15 degrees north latitude while other warships blockaded Spanish Francisco de Zúñiga Gulf near Cape Fear River mouth along with destroyers EGBS(APD)and HMCS Arctic (CVA-19). Fuquay Varina was a small town in Wise County, North Carolina, until the early 19th century. It was founded in 1796 by Captain John Fenton and his family. The area now known as FuquayVarina was originally part of Cherokee Nation. The first permanent settler in Fuquay Varina was Captain John Fenton, who arrived in 1796. He had been sent to this area by the British government to found new settlements after the Battle of Saratoga. In 1804, Captain Fenton's son-in-law, James Avery, built a cabin on what is now called Avery Place. In 1810, General Andrew Jackson came through this area and ordered all Native Americans to leave or be killed. Many of these Indians were taken prisoner and brought to FuquayVarina where they were trained as soldiers for the United States army during the Mexican-American War. After Mexico lost that war, many of these Indian prisoners returned home and started anew life in FuquayaVarina. In 1814, Captain John Cravitt left FuquayaVarina for good and formed a new settlement at Pembine Creek nearNC State University (later NC State University Greensboro). This move may have been motivated by concerns that Confederate forces would attack Union forces stationed around Pembine Creek if FuquayeVarina remained under Union control. In 1829, she married John Faucette and they moved to Raleigh, North Carolina. They had three children: John Faucette Jr., Mary Faucette, and Anna Faucette. After her husband's death in 1865, Fuquay Varina continued to live in Raleigh until her death on October 26th of that year.
