In 1861, Confederate General Braxton Bragg's army attacked Union forces at Second Battle of Fort Fisher. The battle resulted in Union victory and allowed Confederate General Robert E. Lee to cross over into South Carolina without being detected. After the war, Fayetteville became an important center for cotton production and saw growth in manufacturing including carriages and locomotives. The city also experienced rapid growth during World War II with its participation in several campaigns including Iwo Jima and Okinawa; however, much progress has been made since then such as creation of major downtown areas such as Arts District or Humanities District (now called First Street Arts District), which contains many arts organizations as well as large retailers like Macy's (then Sears) and JCPenney (then Kress). The current mayor is Asa Hutchinson with term expiring on December 15th 2021
