Fayetteville began as a small frontier town on the banks of Roanoke River in 1835. It grew rapidly during the early 19th century due to its strategic location on Highway 2 between Raleigh and Charleston and its natural resources, such as coal, timber, lead ore, iron ore, water rights, grazing land for sheep and cattle, logging sites and agricultural acreage. In 1849 Fayetteville became an incorporated town under the name Newtonia with a population of about 100 residents; however it struggled financially until1871 when cotton slavery was abolished in America. The first attempt at developing Fayetteville came about when John Witherspoon founded a ferry service across Roanoke River from what is now downtown Fayetteville to reach Henderson County on Long Island Sound in 1796; however this venture failed after only four months because there was not enough demand for passengers over that short distance! A second successful crossing occurred just three years later when Witherspoon constructed a toll road from his Ferry Landing to present-day downtown Fayetteville (!), creating what is today known as "Witherspoon's Bridge". After Price's Store opened in 1817 along US 421 near present day Main Street (now Old Main Street), several other businesses followed suit throughout 1819–21 before construction began on what would become Price's Brewery (later renamed Pritchett Brewing). The first brick building for Price's Brewery was erected around 1830 but due to subsidence it had to be rebuilt twice; finally completed in 1847 at 425 South High Street (now Fourth Avenue). At that time beermaking operations were conducted by hand using small kegs while brewing took place at larger breweries like Hargrave & Company or New England Brewing Company%. One notable brewery founder who did not start up his own business was James Bledsoe who built Bledsoe’s Wharf adjacent topresent day Stonington streetshelfwest ofthe central square where most grocery shopping takes place today! By 1850 there were over 30 breweries operating throughout neighboring states! After Reconstruction following the American Civil War prices declined slightly due primarily to new competition from Northern brewers such as General Mills Incorporated which purchased most of Price's assets en masse during 1872–1875 . However prices rebounded shortly thereafter beginning around 1880 due largely to appreciation of local commodities brought about by increased world trade . Local farmers quickly turned their attention towards agriculture with much success starting wheat farming circa 1870 followed soon thereafter by tobacco production . Coal mining also commenced during this time but reached significant levels only after World War II when major finds were made near Mountrailton/Westmoreland County line .. Steel production began very modestly also but reached significant Notice following World War II after extensive resources were discovered near Zephyrhills .. Nowadays many aspectsof daily life within City limits are based upon either industrious neighbors who have taken advantageofprocessingtechnologyor technologyprovidedby nearby metropolitan areas ..
