Fayetteville is a town located in western North Carolina. As of the 2010 census, the population was 38,898. The town is named after General Nathanael Greene, who fought in the American Revolution and was later a U.S. Senator from Georgia. Fayetteville is one of twelve townships in Buncombe County and is bordered by the Cherokee Nation to the north, Gaston County to the east, Rockingham County to the south and Johnston County to the west. The town lies on an ancient Native American hunting ground that has been home to numerous tribes over time. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Fayetteville in 1770 when Captain James Robertson and his party traveled downriver from Wilmington, North Carolina en route to make their way upcountry for trade purposes. Captain Robertson's party met with Chief Justice John Rutledge and other prominent settler leaders at a location known today as Park Hill before continuing on their journey upriver. In 1771 Major James Moore founded a permanent settlement at present-day downtown Fayetteville along Wirtz Creek which he called Moore's Landingdue to its proximity to commercially valuable land that had recently been acquired by Colonel Nathaniel Dixon (later renamed Buncombe County). The first store opened in this area on December 12th, 1771 by Captains Robertson and Moore under license from British authorities at Fort Cumberland near Charlotteburg, South Carolina; this store was closed shortly thereafter due primarily to Indian hostilities against white settlers throughout much of South Carolina during these early days of our statehood! In 1824 Zebulon Pike laid out Fayetteville as part of his plan for new railroad routes connecting Charlotte with Raleigh/Durham through Johnston County; however, this idea never came into fruition because developers found it too difficult or expensive to build transportation infrastructure within such a small township! By 1829 there were only six homes remaining in downtown Fayetteville – three churches (the First Presbyterian Church built 1836-38), one schoolhouse (1828) – all of which had been destroyed by fire years earlier! However, despite these challenges many people continued residing in downtown Fayetteville until well into the 20th century; it became an important commercial center for local businesses including many stores operated by African Americans prioritizing access without discrimination! During World War II much activity took place in downtown Fayetteville as munitions plants were established here along with military barracks erected nearby such as Ft Bragg Airfield just outside town limits! AfterWorld War II general economic decline setin followed throughout much of America resulting in increasing poverty and crime rates being experienced throughout our city until finally reversing during the late 1990s when investments began Recovery Era Development initiatives culminating with DowntownFayetteVILLE transformation project completed in 2003 spearheaded by Mayor Jim Wells!!! This project included installation/renovation of new sidewalks & streetlights as well as reestablishment of historic Downtown storefronts featuring original architecture dating back before 1860!!! This project also included reactivation & restoration of landmarked buildings such as First Presbyterian Church – considered one Of America’s Most Beautiful Churches returned To Usefullness In 2007!! Today’s economy continues strong with job growth reported annually averaging over 10% since 2000 while median household income has increased more than 5x since 2000!!! While crime rates have decreased significantly over recent years they remain high enough concern law enforcement officials who continue working diligently year round 365 days per year!!!!
