In 1876, Fayetteville, North Carolina was the site of the first successful practical use of an optical tube in a telescope. A group of businessmen pooled their resources to build and operate a new observatory called the Cumberland Observatory. The purpose of the observatory was to study stars and planets, but it soon became known for its ability to see through haze and fog. In 1883, they built what is now known as the Great American Telescope. This telescope was able to resolve objects up to about 122 miles away! Fayetteville is a city in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 41,871 at the 2010 census. Fayetteville is the county seat and largest city of Cabarrus County. It is part of the Charlotte metropolitan area and is one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. Fayetteville was founded by George Washington during his stay in North Carolina as a military encampment on July 12, 1776. On October 15, 1776, Congress passed an act that made Fayetteville the permanent capital of North Carolina. In 1837, Fayetteville became a state capital when it was added to the Union as part of Kentucky. The Great Fire of 1835 destroyed most of downtown but did not damage much else within what would become Fayetteville proper. In 1865, General Robert Ewell led Confederate forces into town to besiege Union troops entrenched around McClellan's Army Corps' supply depot at Millstream Drive and White Street near Central Square for three days before withdrawing without achieving any results other than raising prices on goods in town for civilians who had come to support them. This event helped make Fayetteville an abolitionist stronghold throughout much of Reconstruction Era America until cotton prices began falling after World War II caused more African Americans to migrate to Northern cities like Detroit and Cleveland while keeping many white residents hereabouts (the "Black Belt"). In 1966–1968 John Lennon performed two concerts at PNC Park in Charlotte – one on September 25th and one on October 1st – just blocks away from where he would later be assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald less than two months later
