Fayetteville was founded on October 15, 1795 by Colonel Nathanael Greene and Major John Brown as an outpost on Roanoke Island while they were exploring northwestern North Carolina for a possible British invasion force. In 1819, Fayetteville became part of Virginia when that state seceded from the United States. However, it continued to serve as an independent town until 1868 when it became a part of northern McDowell County under then-County President James Kenedy. The first post office opened in Fayetteville on November 12, 1818; it was known as Wilkesboro until 1830 when it changed its name to Fayetteville in honor of Arthur Ashe who won both the Wimbledon tennis championship (in 1886) and a U.S. Open tennis match against World No 1 Johan Borg (now considered one of the greatest tennis players ever) at McLean Park near downtown Fayetteville just four days before his death on August 14th that year; Ashe’s victory helped give impetus to amateur sports throughout much of Davidson County some two centuries later."
