Additionally, two major professional sports teams – the Charlotte Hornets and Durham Bulls – are based in town while UNC Asheville students currently compete at three NCAA Division I schools: Davidson College (men’s), Appalachian State University (women’s) andUNC Chapel Hill (men’s).

The city was founded on September 25, 1795 by General James Wilkinson and named after his birthplace in Scotland – Fenton Court House in that year being one of only two counties (the other being Cherokee County) to be organized within North Carolina as part of its new Constitution emergency powers were given to the new government "to provide for the defense of this State against all enemies within or without it". In 1801, when American troops arrived following a series of Indian Wars along the Appalachian Mountains, Wilkinson's original town became known as Fort Loudoun because military installations had been constructed there at that time. The town grew rapidly due to cotton production and transportation links with Charleston; however during Reconstruction (1868-77), it experienced significant violence from white mobs which destroyed many homes and business interests. In 1876 Major General William Tecumseh Sherman's Union army burned down much of downtown Fayetteville while besieging Fort Donelson on Nashville Mountain;[1] this event is generally considered to have been the beginning of Reconstruction period in America. After World War II ended, Fayetteville experienced rapid growth as an educational center with several colleges/universities opening their doors including Randolph-Macon College (now Randolph-Webb University), Davidson Colleges and East Tennessee State University before becoming nationally known for its research institutions such as Duke University School of Medicine and Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene & Long Term Care.[2][3] However during most portions of the 1990s violent crimerates continued to increase,[4][5][6] culminating with a string of high profile shootings across town starting in 1998 which left four people dead including three students at UNC Chapel Hill Campus before finally reversing trend later that year[7][8] On October 6th 2017 Mayor Pro Tem Patrick Cannon announced he would not seek re-election next year due to health concerns,[9] setting off an election campaign between him and challenger Loretta Sanchez who won easily
