Fayetteville, NC is a city in western North Carolina and the county seat of Fayette County. The population was 102,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg metropolitan area. Fayetteville has been inhabited by people for more than 10,000 years. In 1692, English colonists named it "Fayettown" after Sir William Fayet, governor of Virginia at that time. Fort Royal was constructed on what is now downtown Fayetteville in 1705 as part of British operations against Spanish settlers in what is now South Carolina. Fayetteville also played an important role during World War II as one of six U.S.-occupied communities within easy reach of England or France through airfields such as Camp Beale and Camp Lee; many American soldiers were stationed here while serving in European theaters including Normandy and Northern Europe before embarking for Operation Overlord later that year; some 1 million tons (100 metric tons) worthof munitions were unloaded at camp sites across southeastern North Carolina between mid-August 1944 and late October 1945 alone thanks to work done by local workers with military equipment suppliers located nearby Spartanburg Air Force Base (now Wright-Patterson AFB). More than quarter million Allied troops were mobilized here during World War II – making it one of only two cities throughout United States history to do so –and almost all military personnel who entered service were processed and housed HERE until discharge or separation from service according to provisions made under Executive Order 9065 which designated November 8th thru December 5th 1946 as “ National Service Day” throughout the United States Citizenry
