Fayetteville is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina and the county seat of Fayette County. The population was 137,604 at the 2010 census, making it the most populous city in Fayette County. The city is home to many businesses and institutions, including UNC-Chapel Hill, Fayetteville State University, and Fayetteville Convention Center. The first permanent white population in what is now Fayetteville arrived during the early 19th century as soldiers on horseback led by General James A. Johnston invaded Cherokee lands to punish them for raids into British-held territory. In 1814 Governor Tryon convened a convention to establish a new government for southeastern North Carolina following an uprising against English rule that had taken place several months earlier in neighboring South Carolina. At this meeting two men – John Sevier and Davy Crockett – were elected as representatives from Mecklenburg County to represent the newly proposed region east of the Appalachian Mountains known then as Transylvania (now southern Kentucky). The resulting government was called the provisional government of Georgia because that was where its capital had been located at that time: Savannah, Georgia. In 1839–40 settlers began moving into what would become Fayetteville from surrounding areas including Morganton and Caldwell counties; land values in these regions were high enough so that families could afford property instead of relying on military service or indentured servitude to purchase it. By 1840 there were about 60 buildings in town alone with 1,500 residents; taverns such as The Wharf Tavern regularly functioned as meeting places for civic leaders and farmers who sold goods they produced or raised livestock nearby at markets held every Thursday evening until around 1830 when streetcars became available; retail establishments included one grocery store founded by John Chavis in 1841 which continued operation until 1865; four leather stores opened between 1851 and 1861 alongMain Street; two grist mills opened between 1850 and 1862 while another flour mill commenced operations in 1870 (the present day Jardine Mill); three banks used cash registers beginning around 1860: First National Bank building still stands today (1860), PNC bank building also extant (1899), Broadway Savings Bank building also extant since 1956 (1956) The development of transportation allowed people to move away from rural areas closer to urban centers such as Charlotte where cotton prices were high enough to support large Scale Factory workforces outside of slavery but not affordable enough for sharecroppers living on small parcels near plantations employment opportunities lagged behind wages commensurate with production value In 1865 Union General William Tecumseh Sherman's march through central America destroyed much machinery producing cottonseed oil plants located south of Knoxville Tennessee which left thousands unemployed vacuum cleaners blowing dust out their eyes became common jobs associated with Machine Shop restoration occupations displacing black women machine operators
