The first post office in Fayetteville was established on December 17, 1824. In 1865, Fayetteville became the state capital of North Carolina and remained so until 1937 when Raleigh took over that role. The first store in what would become Fayetteville was opened by entrepreneur James Buchanan Drummond on May 1, 1825 just outside of town limits at what is now East Main Street and Seventh Avenue NW. At that time it was one of only a few stores open for business in what would become Fayetteville. Drummond's store soon became a major center for Scottish-Irish culture with many events being held at his home including bingo games, executions (usually involving whiskey) and other social activities that helped keep the community connected during difficult times. In 1840 Drummond organized a party to celebrate Saint Patrick's Day which included singing Irish songs outdoors while partaking in pagan ceremonies inside his house on Second Street SW near present day Church Street NE
