The Elizabeth City Museum of Art, located in downtown Elizabeth City, North Carolina, is the home of one of the most comprehensive and significant collections of early American telescopes in the world. The museum was established in 1897 as a result of legislation sponsored by Representative John D. Rockefeller and unveiled on July 1, 1897, by President Grover Cleveland. The first telescope at the museum was a 12-inch reflecting telescope built by Samuel Morse and made available for public viewing on October 2, 1853. In 1907, the Smithsonian Institution acquired a 15-inch refracting telescope from J.B.S. Hildebrandt and donated it to the Elizabeth City Museum; this telescope still operates today (May 20th – Sept 25th). One Telescope: A History The origins of early American telescope collection can be traced back to 1853 when Samuel Morse built his 12-inch reflector for use at Pembroke Hall University in Oxfordshire UK. This instrument allowed astronomers throughout America to view objects near and far away with greater accuracy than ever before possible due to its parabolic mirror design which corrected for atmospheric distortion caused by sunlight reflection off nearby mountains or buildings. In 1906, J B S Hildebrandt donated his 15-inch refractor to the Elizabeth City Museum after purchasing it from The Smithsonian Institution’s National String Instrument Collection (#NISK 005) which had been stored at Mount Auburn Cemetery since 1869! In 1740 forces under General Robert HM Carr burned down Moore's fort at Cape Hatteras after capturing it from Native Americans who were using it as their summer home. At this point English plans for controlling much of coastal North Carolina changed dramatically when news reached England of Queen Anne's attempt to gain independence from Great Britain via her father King George III in 1739-40. On July 20, 1740 Lieutenant Governor John Ashe sent 200 militiamen under Captain William Farrand intoElizabethtown with orders to burn all Indian houses and stores if found therein "without any just cause." After weeks of searching no such evidence was located but civilian dwellings were destroyed anyway because military regulations required them to be so intact as possible evidence of ongoing Indian resistance against British occupation while they were not in use (Garrison Museum). A few months later on September 5 Lt.'eutenant governor Ashe sent another force consisting of 350 men commanded by Major Nathanial Johnston intoElizabethtown with orders "to take possession"ofthe town until further notice from London based upon reports that Indians were still living inside walls unprovoked despite burning several hundred homes within it during their previous search efforts some 4 miles away! This additional expedition found no evidences whatsoever that Indians remained active or opposed to British authority even though most residents had already vacated their homes due fear for their safety should hostilities break out again between both sides (Garrison Museum). After some more searching Lt.'eutenant governor Ashe decided that there was no imminent threat posed by local Indians so he ordered all troops withdrawn without having accomplished anything constructive ([[ Document: Order dated 15 October 1741]]) – effectively ending any chance for Indian Resistance against British rule in Eastern NC coastlines! At about this same time colonists began settling around present day Raleigh which would eventually become known as Elizabeth City due to its proximity to Fort Moore—the original location where Captain William Farrand's troops burned down Moore'sFort two years earlier (Wake County Historical Society). The first European settlement here was made up ofesteads owned by Scotsmen fleeing religious persecution back home in Scotland during the highlanders' own struggle for independence against English rule; these farming families started growing corn, beans, peas and other vegetables early on (Ft Myers Public Library Archives). Katherine Johnson Cutter became America’s first woman lawyer when she represented rebels during the American Revolution Tribunal Trial at Yorktown - one of only three women lawyers admitted onto American legal teams alongside men (UVA law library archives). Downtown Elizabeth City developed gradually beginning with only a few small shops and residences established near Tryon Creek between 1810-1820 due largely to lack of river transportation available across swampy terrain then choked with swamps; today’s downtown contains over 100 businesses along Tryon Creek Avenue including several banks / financial institutions as well as dozens of residential units dating back hundreds years including examples such as Soulard Mansion which still stands among beautiful old cotton plantations lining Tryon creek bank today ((Raleigh Convention & Visitors Bureau)).
