Elizabeth City, North Carolina (ECN) is a city in and the county seat of Elizabeth County, North Carolina. As of the 2010 census, the population was 30,569. The city is located on the Yadkin River and is bordered by Johnston County to the north and east, Onslow County to the south and west, and Henderson County to the northwest. The first European settlement in what is now Elizabeth City was made by Englishmen at Fort Tryon in 1729. The town grew up around this fort until it was destroyed by a storm in 1814. From then on, Elizabeth City became an important trading center for northeastern North Carolina because of its location on the Yadkin River between Johnston and Henderson Counties. In 1767, when British colonists founded Charlotte/Carytown on what are today Interstate 85 in present-day Charlotte/Mecklenburg County, Elizabeth City became part of that new community. In 1819–20 Cherokee Indian traders traveled through ECN looking for goods they had been gathering near Lake Norman while hunting game in central North Carolina; they brought news back of rich coal mines near Union Mills northeast of Elizabeth City. This encouraged development within ECN as people began Mineshaft Road (now I-85) became one of the most important trade routes in eastern NC during this time period

After years of reconstruction and growth, Elizabeth City began experiencing rapid population growth in the early 21st century due to establishments such as Walmart and UNC Charlotte’s expansions into nearby counties. Today, Elizabeth City is one of the most vibrant communities in central North Carolina and home to over 20 colleges/universities including UNC Chapel Hill (the largest university in Central Carolina), Duke University- Durham Campus (largest research university east of Interstate 80), Southern Living magazine’s “10 Best Places To Live In America” for 2016-17, and many other businesses and professional organizations.
Elizabeth City was founded by the English in 1719 as a trading post on the Roanoke River. The town grew rapidly, and in 1802 it became a seaport. In 1825, Elizabeth City was renamed Charlotte, after Queen Charlotte of England. In 1865, Elizabeth City became the capital of North Carolina.
