The Elizabeth City Schools District was established in 1892. In 1923, the district merged with the Raleigh-Durham School District to form the Raleigh-Durham Education Authority. The authority was renamed the Raleigh-Durham School System in 1957. The school system was placed into receivership in 1966 and again in 1978. In 1981, the school system was abolished and its assets were divided among five other districts.
Elizabeth City, North Carolina (Ecz) is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina and the county seat of Orange County. The population was 66,599 at the 2010 census, making it the 12th-largest city in North Carolina. Elizabeth City was founded by Scotsmen in 1729 as an English trading post on Roanoke Island; it became a U.S. town in 1836 and a city in 1893. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Elizabeth City occurred when Scotsman John Sevier discovered Roanoke Island during his voyage from Scotland to America around 1629 A.D.; he named the island "Roanoke" after his home country, Scotland.[1] In 1729, Captain James Cook sailed along UNC's coast and sighted Roanoke Island while exploring British Virgin Islands;[2] he named it Ecz or "Island of Peace." The first recorded white settler arrived in Elizabeth City on September 8, 1731 when James Forbes landed with 130 men on Roanoke Island as part of search for new land to exploit as part of his expedition led by Captain David Hunter.[3][4][5] For many years prior to Forbes' arrival there were only Indian traders living on Roanoke Island who interacted with local Native American nations through trade; however, when Forbes' group landed whites began interacting with both natives and English merchants seeking new land to exploitation which served as a seed for future growth on the island. After several years of exploration and discovery by various teams including those led by Captains James Cook and Sir George Yeo,[6][7][8] Governor Tryon approved Resolution No 10 dated November 25, 1735 authorizing two New Englanders (John Inglis and Joseph Henson) to establish themselves at present-day Elizabeth City under the name "New Portsmouth." In addition, Elizabeth City served as a central terminus for slave migration through its ports of entry into Georgia and Underground Railroad operations into northern Alabama. The city was destroyed by a fire in 1889 that swept through downtown areas. Despite this setback, Elizabeth City continued to grow significantly during the 20th century; it has since been recognized as one of America's most successful small cities. Today, Elizabeth City is home to both local government services and numerous cultural attractions including an annual Bluegrass Festival and world-renowned Shakespeare Festival.
The City of Elizabeth City was founded in 1838 by Colonel James Fayette. The city and its surrounding area were destroyed in a fire in 1861, but were rebuilt. In 1865, the city was renamed for General Robert E. Lee after he was named general of Confederate States of America.
