Elizabeth City is a town in Rowan County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,716 at the 2010 census. The name of the community comes from Elizabeth River. The first people to live in Elizabeth City were the Lenape Native Americans. They built their small villages on both bank of the Elizabeth River and hunted and fished there. In 1814, Englishman James O'Hara came to Elizabeth City with his family and set up a trading post near what is now known as Court House Square. He named it for himself – James O'Hara's Town – after his brother-in-law, Sir John Moore (1727–1805). In 1825, General Daniel Boone arrived in North Carolina from Kentucky with his group of men looking for a new home for their families. Boone's group camped along the banks of the river until he found an area where he could build a log cabin and call it Elizabeth City. From that location he began to explore this new land which would be called North Carolina by him and his compatriots because of its similarity to Ireland – Irish immigrants had settled here before him. In 1828, John Cushing made history when he became one of the first white men to cross overland into what is now South Carolina on horseback without any help from Native Americans or guides! When he reached Elizabeth City he took possession of some land that today forms part of downtown Raleigh….Cushing had discovered America! After crossing into South Carolina, he founded Columbia on another piece of property that later became known as State Capitol Hill…..After crossing over into Georgia during the American Civil War (1861–1865), Cushing returned home via Georgetown University Ferry which connected Raleigh with Savannah….He died in 1892 at age 86 years old having seen Americasenterprise become one hundred times more extensive than when he left it! From its early days as a trading post near Court House Square until becoming an incorporated town in 1907, Elizabeth City experienced many changes: pioneer John Fenton erected a peach orchard next door to what is now First Baptist Church; milling began around 1830; lumber was brought in by stagecoach driversomesuch as Drayton Wellesley who cut down logs three miles long and two feet wide for building purposes near present day New Bern; brickmaking started about 1840; dairying began about 1850; coal mining started about 1870; textile mills were established about 1900….The Morehead Street Bridge across theElizabeth River led directly to downtown Raleigh……When World War II hit America with all sorts of economic problems including rationingof foodstuffs following Pearl Harbor,,the local paper reported that “the whole city Signal Hill has been put on alert” due to concerns over possible Japanese attack……Although war production stopped abruptly starting in 1944 because there was no need for such large stockpilesно civilians were quickly requisitioned by various military units–sixty percent or more Output went into munitions manufacturing instead– resultant shortages have only recently been alleviated″ Luanne Hensley wrote…………..Today much like then much crime takes place within our limits but also opportunities abound especially if you know how to look for them
The history of the gun swivel is a long and complex one. It began as an invention that was used to change the aim of firearms. In 1814, the U.S.Army built Fort Sumter in Elizabeth City to guard against British attacks. The town declined during the Civil War, but recovered and became an important commercial center after Reconstruction. It lost its status as a town during the 20th century, but regained some of its former prosperity following the creation of Elizabeth City Airport in 1948.
The city of Elizabeth City was founded in 1785 by the brothers James and John Caldwell. It was named for Queen Elizabeth II, who granted it land in 1786. The Caldwell brothers were farmers and politicians who played an important role in the development of the city. They built a small chapel, which is still standing today, and started to build homes. In 1801, they became Mayor of Elizabeth City and helped to start the first school in the city. The Caldwells also donated land to create a park that is now called Anthony Park. In 1825, they married Sarah Johnston and moved into their new home on Main Street. They had two children, John Fenton Caldwell III and Sarah Jane Caldwell.Sarah Jane Caldwell died young in 1856 while John Fenton Caldwell III grew up to be an influential politician and businessman in his own right. He served as Mayor of Elizabeth City from 1961-1965,1970-1975,1981-1983 and 1985-1989.
