The company also purchased firearms for use by the militia company and other local organizations. Gun safety became an issue during Reconstruction period in Elizabeth City. In 1872, violence between white supremacists and black citizens quickly escalated into a full-blown race riot. As a result of this violence, many people fledElizabeth City for safer environments such as Atlanta or Charlotte. This migration left behind abandoned guns that could be used by criminals or by mistake become available to someone who wanted them badly enough. In response to these concerns, Mayor John Foard created the Elizabeth City Safety Committee in 1874 to review gun security Measures withinElizabethCity limits. The committee recommended that all handguns be stored with owners only (never passed up through circulation), that ammunition be kept separate from firearms, that background checks be performed on all individuals purchasing firearms (including those selling weapons), and that shotguns not be sold without first completing a safety class taught by an instructor licensed under federal law." To date, these recommendations have not been fully implemented but are still considered important elements ofgun security policy today."

Banks purchased 640 acres (240 hectares) for £4 per acre from James Fayette Cary for £10 per acre less than one dollar sterling per acre (1¢). In May 1825 he laid out a road from Duke's Mill northwest to his new home at what is now Allston Avenue southeast; this first road led through present day downtown Elizabeth City before turning northeast towards Chapel Hill.Yanceyville Ferry Road crossed Nags Head Creek upstream from today's intersection of High Streets South/North just south ofpresent-day First Baptist Church building; this ferryroad transported goods across Nags Head Creek for local farmers before the town site became developed around1834 At first there were only two businesses - a blacksmith shop run by John Rankin and another store operated by John Sevier - but within months several others had joined Rankin's business including A Brawley & Co., Jno Stevens & Son carriages, Wm Hickey wagon saddles etcetera By early 1830 nearly all village residents had connections to some aspect of agriculture either directly or through their families' connections to friends or relatives who did Soil Conservation District work.. Elizabeth City is a city in central North Carolina, United States. The population was 943 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Durham County. Elizabeth City is located on the Hiwassee River and includes parts of the towns of Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Henderson. The first permanent settler in what is now Elizabeth City was James Aikens, who arrived in 1767. The town site was chosen because it had a deep stream running through it that would make for easy transportation to trade with other settlements in the area. On November 8, 1771, Aikens sold his land to John Dunlap for $10 per acre. Dunlap began to develop the land into a village named Elizabeth City after his wife's mother, Elizabeth Beattie (died 1802). The first school was built in 1772 by Rev. Drury and Mrs.(Hannah) Crampton as an academy for girls under 12 years old. Classes were held twice a week from Monday morning until Friday night with instruction in reading, writing, arithmetic and geometry; education at this time was very limited for women. In 1800 Reverend Drury erected a school house which still stands today on Third Street near downtownElizabeth City In 1828 Nathaniel Banks donated 5 acres (2 km²) of land east of downtown Elizabeth City to be used as a public square called Bank Square which remains one of the most important streets in town today Banks also contributed money towards construction of Russell House which became home to East Carolina University from 1830-1831 . Two years later on October 11th 1830 Alice Cary donated 100 acres (40 km²) west of downtownElizabethCity to become what is now Cary Park Raleighans soon started settling this part of town and by 1835 there were over 150 people living here including several families who had bought property adjoining Cary Park including James Moseley whose family owned 4 lots totaling 21/24acre(8 ha)
One of the most important events in Elizabeth City's history occurred in 1865 when Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House. This event ended the war on the southern side and helped to make Elizabeth City a major center for trade and commerce.
