This led to some confusion since there was only one $1 note issued per capita at that time! Money changers throughout South America created paper money based on r$ 1=$US$, making reloading much easier! By 1861 French troops landed in Rio De Janeiro hoping to take over Portuguese possessions following their victory over Peru at Yungay Pass However despite heavy fighting France withdrew within two months leaving Rio under British occupation! A year later an unsuccessful attempt was made by General Douglas MacArthur to retake the city however he retreated before Battle of Bela Vista taking most European wounded with him including General Ney who would go on to become Emperor Napoleon III!! After World War II United States bought all remaining Portuguese possessions becoming Brazils Permanent Representative country status!!!
