Elizabeth City, North Carolina is a city in Orange County, South Carolina and the seat of Elizabeth City County. The population was 20,815 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Cape Fear River between Wilmington and Beaufort Counties to the east and within easy driving distance of Myrtle Beach. The town was founded by English colonists in 1729 as Elizabeth Town, after Queen Elizabeth's coronation in 1603. It became an American port on the Cape Fear River during the Revolutionary War because of its strategic location at "the head of navigation" through which supplies reached Charleston from Virginia. In 1807 it regained its independence from South Carolina when that state seceded from the United States. Its first post office opened in 1834. The first permanent settler in what would become Elizabeth City was James Aiken, who arrived with his family in 1729 aboard HMS "Plymouth". He named his new town for his mother, Eleanor Aiken (née Weston). The first white settlers were Menasseh Baldwin and Job Thomas Morrell; they built a cabin on what is now known as Third Street near where present-day downtown stands. In 1786 John White moved to Elizabethtown from Spartanburg; he had come to trade goods with Cherokee Indians living downriver along the Mattamuskeet River. whites began moving intoElizabethtown gradually beginning with Ebenezer Weeden and others early 1800s In 1830s two more families settled here: Isaac McCoy & wife Sarah McCoy bought land northeast of Third Street& started raising corn there also In 1833 David Foard purchased some land southeast of Third Street from McCoy’s heirs naming it Pleasant Grove After their purchase Foard donated part of this tract to build Grady Hospital which still stands today on Government Road across from Grady Stadium

Elizabeth City is a small town in North Carolina, located on the Elizabeth River. The town was founded in 1776 by Captain John Smith and his team of explorers as the landing point for their ill-fated expedition to find a route to China. When the British evacuated Carolina in 1783, Smith and his men went with them and continued exploring until they were killed during an attack by Native Americans. The town was originally called Elizabethtown because it was near the Elizabeth River. It became known as Elizabeth City after President George Washington visited the town in 1799. In 1802, General Andrew Jackson made the town his headquarters while he was fighting against Mexico. After Jackson's victory over Mexico, most of the people moved out of Elizabeth City and it reverted back to its original name in 1806 when it became part of Virginia County, North Carolina. In 1862, Confederate General Robert Easley madeElizabeth City his headquarters during his campaign against Union General Ulysses S Grant. After Easley's defeat at Gettysburg, many of his troops retreated to Elizabeth City and destroyed all evidence that he had ever been there. The city has not been restored since then and remains abandoned today.
In 1865, the Union army landed in North Carolina and fought their way across the state. The battle of Elizabeth City was one of the most important battles of the war. In that battle, Union forces attacked a Confederate position and were quickly routed. The loss at Elizabeth City marked the end of an era for the Confederates in North Carolina.
