In 1875, local businessmen pooled their resources and founded the Elizabeth City Gunsmithy Company to provide this service. By 1889, they had developed a kit that consisted of a plunger, bucket, cloth, soap and water.
Elizabeth City, North Carolina is a town located in western Davidson County, North Carolina. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. Elizabeth City is the county seat of Davidson County. The town is bordered by Easton to the north and east, Rutherford to the south and west, and Quitman to the northwest. The first permanent English settler in what is now Elizabeth City was James Mckenzie in 1768-1769. McKenzies were part of a group of Scottish settlers who trekked overland from Scotland through Tennessee into eastern North Carolina in search of new land. When they reached what is now Elizabeth City, they erected a small log cabin on an banks of the Yadkin River. A few years later, McKenzies married Margaret White and moved their family to what would become Elizabeth City. In 1787, General Nathanael Greene established his headquarters at Uptown Court House in Elizabeth City after winning his campaign against British forces at Saratoga Springs in New York. Afterward, Greene made it his home while he awaited instructions from Washington about next steps during the American Revolution. After independence was declared on July 4th, 1807, many homes in Durham County were burned by patriot militiamen as part of an effort to overthrow British rule over that area. On October 3rd, 1807 – just days after Declaration of Independence – General Anthony Wayne arrived at Uptown Court House with 10,,000 men for the purpose of liberating Johnston’s army from its encampment near Jarratt’s Ford on Johnston's Mill Road outside present day Elizabeth City limits (the battle took place two miles east ofpresent-day Uptown). At this time there were only three settlements within present day Davidson County: ElizabethCity proper (now known as Rutherford), Easton Township (now called Asheboro), and Quitman Township (now called Hendersonville). Consequently most residents living within those boundaries at that time did not know or cares about events taking place outside their townships/villages; however when General Wayne's brigade stopped at Jarratt's Ford on October 3rd many people began moving towards him expecting freedom rather than independence which they had heard about through news reports coming back from England The following year saw another bumper crop due largely to rain harvesting operations being conducted by local farmers under instruction from General Wayne himself as part of Operation cornpuppy . By November 25th much acreage had been harvested making it clear that corn wasn't going to be a problem for long.. Unfortunately for everyone involvedrain continued to fall all winter creating problems with transportation and seed production which impaired overall yields for both rural landowners AND city fathers eager for extra cash farming options) The problem was compounded by Indian hostilities along Iredell Creek where Cherokee Native Americans had taken up residence trying - unsuccessfully -to drive out white settlers battlefield Report No: NCGS1-00584 Original Date: November 26th 1864 Page 2
