The area now known as Elizabeth City was once a part of the Cherokee Nation. The town was founded by Captain James Cook in 1768, and became an important trading post on the Tennessee River. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson invaded Cherokee country and burned most of the town to the ground. The Cherokee Nation regained control of Elizabeth City in 1815.
