During Reconstruction period (1868-1912), many Irish Catholics moving westward to escape political persecution came through Lenoir to find work in local businesses or join Union forces during the American Civil War (1861- 1865). Many families also decided to stay behind after Confederate General Robert E Hoke surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865; their areas of eastern Johnston County had become free from bondage but their homes were not! As soon as Cherokee Indian Territory opened up following Reconstruction it seemed likely that these same Irish Catholic refugees would come back into this largely Protestant/Anglican stronghold again looking for work opportunities and slice open another pie - though there may have been some internal migration among these veterans too!). So much for hope!!! Some initial Welcome Back activities were held at Presbyterian Church across from LEnoir's current location on Frankfort Street just north of downtown; however things quickly got out of hand when “The Boss” George Patton made his appearance on horseback riding through our little town center!! He & his cronies had stopped by our parttime store before raiding it while we were closed so demonstrations & loud singing ensued throughout much damage control which ended with George getting roughed up pretty good inside! All kidding aside, those days (& nights) certainly knew how to party大!!!! Nope...still don't know what Sleepin' On my Own looks like today without youwelcome back mugshots included !!!lol In 1907, when Asheboro merged with LenoirCity, both cities had populations totaling 710 residents each! This merger resulted in increased business opportunities due to shared infrastructure between both towns including aPhone Company which operated out of bothLenoirCity & ElizabethCity until 1984 when it merged with NC Telcom Corp., Inc., making ElizabethCity an official city under state law #827(a).
