The first European to set foot in Elizabeth City was Captain John Smith in 1629, who named it after his home town, Elizabethan England. In 1701, Colonel George Washington arrived in Elizabeth City and established a military post here which he called Mount Vernon. After America gained independence from Great Britain in 1776, Elizabeth City became an important center for political and military affairs during the Revolutionary War. During this time,Elizabeth City also became known as "The Queen's Town" because of its position as one of the few major British posts left in North Carolina after their defeat at Saratoga. After the war ended,ElizabethCity experienced a period of growth and development that continue until today.
