Eden, North Carolina is a town in Stanly County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg–Wilmington Combined Statistical Area. Eden was founded in 1792 by Scots-Irish settlers from Ulster who had crossed the Atlantic Ocean to escape religious and political persecution in their homeland. The name came from "Eden" (a small hamlet near Belfast) and "Henderson" (the first settler). Henderson's only claim to fame was that he invented a process for turning cotton into paper. The town sprang up quickly on land donated by General James Ewing during the antebellum period as an agricultural center for eastern Randolph County. In 1820 Eden became one of twelve counties formed under the new state government of North Carolina. The county courthouse moved to Eden in 1825 and remains there today. In 1830 John Sibley erected his sawmill on the confluence of Nashua Creek and Catawba River, which became known as Sibley's Mill because it supplied goods to nearby towns such as Durham and Cornelius until its closure in 1984. That same year Eden's first schoolhouse was built on what is now Main Street; it was replaced by a larger structure in 1897 after school attendance began mandatory for all children between the ages of five and eight years old statewide. The present day city of Eden was founded in 1903 when two separate towns merged – Eden Mills South and West – Consolidated into one place with its own post office, police department, fire department, public library, etc., until annexation by Charlotte in 1979; however City Hall still stands on Main Street within walking distance of both communities’ original downtowns where businesses once thrived before consolidation!
