Eden is a small town located in Henderson County, North Carolina. The population of Eden was 1,527 at the 2000 census. In 1814, when Henderson County was created from parts of Moore and Orange counties, Eden was one of the first towns to be established. It was named for the Garden of Eden in the Bible. The town received its start as a result of the construction of a railroads through Henderson County. The first railroad to come through Eden was the Charlotte and Johnston Railroad, which came through in 1851. The town quickly became known for its produce and lumber products. In 1863, Eden became home to America's second woolen mill after Lancaster, Pennsylvania. This mill produced both cashmere and other woolen fabrics until it closed in 1931. In 1865, Captain James Aiken founded the Savannah & Wilmington Railway Company in Eden with money he had saved from his previous job as a surveyor for Union troops during the American Civil War. This company built several miles of track throughout Henderson County and shipped goods such as cotton seed, flour, haystacks, coals and salt overland to Wilmingtonport on Carolina Bay. Captain Aiken also began what would become one of Eden's most important businesses: selling ice cream from his home rink on High Street until 1903 when he moved to Ocean View Heights (now Fountain City). He continued this business into his old age until he passed away in 1923; incidentally, one-third of all ice cream sold in North Carolina that year came from Captain Aiken's shop! During World War II (1939-1945), many people worked at local factories building aircraft parts or munitions including men who worked at First National Bank Building on Main Street which manufactured water bombers for U.S Air Force pilots during Operation Overlord (the Normandy landings). Other businesses that generated jobs during this time were Standard Oil Company store on Market Street which supplied gasoline for military vehicles; Wernham’s Pharmacy on State Road 10 where soldiers took their medication before battle; Newsome Furniture Store on Church Street which housed army surplus stores before they were distributed throughout southern Korea; Post Office at 5th &Main Streets where mail was sent between major cities across North Carolina; Elks Lodge #2A donated by Earl Hardison who served as president pro tempore (a position equivalent to today's chairperson) during Reconstruction era Eden experienced some significant changes after World War II including becoming an all-white community while black residents remained scattered throughout other rural areas around NC In 1957 there was a fire that destroyed much property within town limits leaving only two buildings standing: One being used as meeting hall for village trustees while another serving as business office
