Eden, North Carolina is a small town in Swain County, North Carolina. The population was 1,924 at the 2010 census. Eden is on the Banks of the Neuse River and is home to Biltmore Estate, one of the largest privately owned estates in United States history. Eden began as a small settlement called Greeneville on what is now known as Eden Township. In 1868, Benjamin Franklin Butler purchased 2,200 acres (8 km²) of land along the banks of the Neuse River for $5 per acre ($0.36 per kilometer). The surrounding area became known as "The Garden of Eden." In 1869, Butler donated two miles (3 km) of road from his estate to serve as a main artery through his property. By 1871, all but five percent of Hudsonsville had been built and there were only 305 residents living in Greeneville and 422 residents living in Eden Township. In 1875-76, prominent Methodist preacher Dr. James Witherspoon organized an educational mission trip to America which included stops in Greeneville and Eden Township. Upon their return they recommended that Reverend Witherspoon build a Presbyterian church in each community adjacent to agricultural land so that Christianity could be preached to rural farmers who did not have access to formal churches or religious education. On December 17th1875, Reverend Witherspoon officiated at the dedication ceremonies for First Presbyterian Church located on present day Eveleigh Road in East Eden Township outside of Greeneville township limits northward to New Hope Chapel begun by Rev Smiley Lewisohn with assistance from Mayor Prentice Griggs Parks Sr., Drs Henson & Chalmers Streets Trinity Episcopal Church Ladies Auxiliary Committee Mrs John Fenton Novice Class Miss Anna McDonald Chorus Greeting Bible read by Rev JB Boyd Garrison Deaconess Mrs Lillie Towell Vestry Clerk

In 1867, an act was passed that allowed for white women to own land in North Carolina and they began to purchase land at an increased rate than before. This caused some tension between black and white citizens but ultimately resulted in more development occurring within the town. In 1901-1902 when a new school building was constructed on West Main Street in Eden, it became the first public high school west of Raleigh (later Cary). Furthermore, during this time period many businesses opened up within the town including a post office (1868), grocery store (1872), lumber mill (1875), bakery (1878), restaurant(1901) and doctor’s office(1904).
