Eden, North Carolina is a small town located in the Piedmont region of central North Carolina. The population was 3,814 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Durham–Chapel Hill Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named for Eden Parish in France which was then part of England. The first settler in what is now Eden was Levi Coffin who arrived in 1819 and started a store. In 1830, John Clements bought land and built a house which still stands today as the oldest structure in Eden. In 1836, Captain Wm Hogg granted permission to build a church on his land which became known as First Baptist Church. Reverend James Benge preached at this church from 1840-1845 while it housed its school until 1861 when it moved to what is now Stokes Methodist Episcopal Church which still stands today. In 1855, General Nathaniel Pickett established barracks for Confederate soldiers here and named them "Pickett's Camp" after General Robert E. Lee who fought here during the American Civil War. After Union troops took over these barracks, they were renamed "Edenton Barracks". A post office called Eden was established in 1865, but did not operate until 1870. In 1877 an Act provided for the election of commissioners to manage all aspects of local government within County Durham with responsibility for public education (the first such law passed within Durham County). This act also designated Eden as one of two townships within the new county boundaries - the other being Chapel Hill - with voting privileges and powers greater than those enjoyed by citizens residing within Hyde or Chatham Counties outside Durham County limits (or any other township without representation within Durham County). It wasn’t until 1907 that voters organized into churches serving both civil and religious functions before electing trustees to manage day-to-day affairs including finances, operations & maintenance etc., under leadership exercised by Revs JB Payne & Fenton Coulter respectively; their successors have continued uninterruptedly since then!
