As a result, many Confederate commanders decided to end the war by surrendering unconditionally rather than fight another long and costly battle. One such commander was General Robert E. Lee, who chose to surrender at Eden instead. This event is often considered the beginning of the end for the Confederacy because it allowed Union forces to march into town and take control without any resistance from local Confederate forces
Eden, North Carolina is a small town located in the Pender County area of North Carolina. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. Eden is located on the banks of the Nash River and is bordered by Scotland to its east, Pender County to its south, and Ashe County to its west. It is known for being an agricultural community with several industries including paper manufacturing and poultry production. Eden has a small-town feel with many residents using their homes as personal residences as well as local businesses located in the village square. The economy depends largely on agriculture and retail trade which are supported by local service organizations such as churches and schools. The first Europeans to visit Eden were Dutch settlers who named it "Aanhalt" after one of their trading posts in what is now Delaware County (now part of Wilmington). In 1736 Englishman Richard Henderson charted a route from Charlotte toNC that passed through what is now Eden and he named the river after his home town of Hertfordshire in England - later called Haddington in America because of this connection. In 1827 US mapmaker Danforth published a plan for NC that included Eden within Randolph County but this plan never materialized because Randolph county was created only two years earlier when parts of Moore County were taken from Durham COUNTY (southwest corner) Today, most people living in Eden remember their childhood memories playing around the Nash River or going fishing at one of several local ponds situated just upstream from town limits. There are also numerous historical artifacts housed at various institutions in town including Hargrave Museum & Research Library which was established in 1957; Pioneer Farmstead Museum which was founded in 1916; Methodist Episcopal Church built c 1870; post office built 1888 In addition to its namesake river, other notable features include three small dams used for irrigation: Cedar Falls Dam operated by NC State University; Mill Pond Dam constructed by Wirtz Brothers Manufacturing Company during World War II; and Big Lake Reservoir opened 1969 providing flood control over much of eastern Pender Counties while also serving as a water supply for rural areas surrounding Newton Plantation north of town Limits There have been significant changes throughout history associated with those living near Eden - primarily due to growth within neighboring towns mentioned previously - but some general trends can be observed: more recent residents have tended to be older adults or retirees rather than young college graduates or recent parents looking for an active community lifestyle (although there are exceptions); there has been increased diversity among residents since 1990 when EDEN became part of Raleigh-Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area ; church attendance has generally remained high despite changing demographics although there are now more alternative services available nearby ); development patterns have typically followed similar patterns since early 1800s with farmers moving out into adjacent counties while entrepreneurs took up land holdings near rivers/lakes ; social events/ activities focus increasingly on education, genealogy research, music performances etc., rather than outdoor recreation .

Eden, North Carolina is a town in Swain County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. Eden is named after the biblical Garden of Eden. The first settler in Eden was James Burchfield who came from Scotland in 1795 and established himself on a farm near what is now Eden Mills Rd. By 1802, Burchfield had married Anna Haddock and built a log cabin on his farmstead which he called "Haddock's Cabin." In 1806-7, John Brown settled in what is now Eden and platted out land for himself and others around what are now parts of Dutch Gap Rd., Swede Rd., Lower Mill Dr., Dogwood Ln., and Centerville Rd.. Brown also built a mill which he operated until it burned down in 1837. In 1830-31 Nathaniel Furman located his plantation just east of what is now Dutch Gap Rd.. Furman named his plantation "Eden" after the Garden of Eden where Adam and Eve were designed to live according to God’s plan. In 1840 Samuel Morse arrived at English Creek Station (now Rincon) along with his family and began building a line of railroads that would later be known as the Transcontinental Railroad. After living among Native Americans for several years including trading goods with them, Morse developed an interest in their language so he started learning it as well asukwadun (the Cherokee name for “the land beyond the mountains”). He then decided to naming this new railroad company after one of the most important tribes among these Indians – the Cherokees call themselves “The Tennessee River Bandits” because they rob banks along that stretch of road during wintertime when travel by horse or wagon is not possible due to frozen ground.) On January 15th 1861 Morse finally received approval from Congress to start construction on The Westphalian Railway Company – later renamed The East Tennessean Railway Company – with headquarters at Roanoke Junction north of Knoxville. As work continued on The East Tennessean Railway Company through 1862 various changes were made such as renaming it again as The East Tennessee & Western Railway Company before finally becoming simply The TennesseanRailroad Company effective November 1st 1865…..On January 14th 1870 [George Stephenson] became president/CEOof T&WCo when Col[onel A.]Bennett took over from George Stephenson…. shortly thereafter [Alexander Cassatt] became head engineer………………….In 1875 [David S.] McNeely purchased all shares in T&WCo….. By 1880 McNeely had shortened both lines into two segments; one segment running southward from Knoxville through Johnson City while another ran northward through Nashville concurrent with Vanderbilt RR….It should be noted that early surface transportation methods such as wagons loaded high with goods pushed across isolated mountain passes were very difficult if not impossible given treacherous roads conditions……After David S.' purchase T&W Co actually went bankrupt but eventually reorganized under new management including David McNeely's son Dershowitz brothers Cyrus Adolphus (1848-1925), Emanuel Julius Abramoff(1850-1920), Harry Emerson Fenton (1851-1928)and Jens Nyborg Rasmussen(1855-1936). Under their leadership WSM acquired more mileage adding interurban service between Chattanooga & Hendersonville; opened up new lines within TN & GA; built largest railway yard west of Mississippi River; constructed first electric locomotive Utopia Express trainset & completed electrification throughout entire system on May 2nd 1911.........Dershowitz Brothers also bought interestin Memphis Sealed Road company.......By 1923 Davidson Electric Supply Corporation merged into WSM......
