Eden, North Carolina is a small town located in Henderson County, North Carolina. The population was 582 at the 2000 census. Eden was founded in 1868 by James B. Dickinson and his family, as a citrus plantation near what is now Hendersonville. The Dickinson family continued to operate their plantation until it was sold to Coca Cola in 1903. Eden has had several notable residents over the years, including Quincey Morris Butler, who served as United States Ambassador to South Africa from 1955 to 1957; and Ulysses S. Grant Wood Jr., who was born here in 1856 and died here in 1946. Eden also played a significant role during the Civil War, with soldiers being housed there for various purposes such as supply trains and camps. After the war, Eden became known as a center of cotton production due to its location on the New River system. In recent years, however, Eden has become more focused on its community-oriented programs and events than its traditional agricultural pursuits.
Eden was founded in 1792 by Ebenezer Cook. The town was named after the Eden River, which flows through it. The first post office was established in 1824. In 1837, the remains of a plantation were found near Eden and it was renamed Eden Plantation Park. In 1865, the town became part of Henderson County and in 1907, it became part of Nash County. In 1938, Eden merged with neighboring Hickory to form Hickory-Eden-Allentown Township.
