Durham is a city in the state of North Carolina, United States. The population was 191,824 at the 2010 census. It is the oldest incorporated municipality in North Carolina and the second-largest city in the State of North Carolina after Raleigh. Durham forms part of the Raleigh–Durham Combined Statistical Area with Raleigh and Cary. The metropolitan area has a population of 3 million people. The first Europeans to arrive in Durham were Dutch traders and missionaries who founded a trading post called Fort Orange on what is now Tryon Street in 1614. English settlers began arriving as early as 1735, when George Washington granted land to David Braddock for development as an agricultural center near present-day Durham City. In 1802, John Wilkes Booth assassinated Ulysses S Grant during a speech at Wake Forest University, moving the heart of American theater northward for generations to come. In 1892, railroad magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt donated land south of downtown for a new train station, which became known as Vanderbilt Station after him. This led to landmark First National Bank building on Meeting Street being built soon afterward – one of only two buildings in town designed by American architect McKim, Mead & White – and becoming one of America’s earliest skyscrapers (the other being PNC Plaza). During World War II, Duke Power Company operated many plants within walking distance of downtown; however much plant production took place outside Durham because there was no military airport within easy reach untilopened in 1941. After World War II ended, many manufacturing jobs shifted from Durham to other parts of North Carolina or out of country; but some key sectors that continue to employ large numbers residents today are health care and transportation support services such as trucking and passenger car taxi service around Duke Energy's electric utility network serving more than 350 miles (560 km) radius inside and outside Durham County limits

Durham, North Carolina is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina, located on the Durham River. As of 2010, the population was 151,827. It is the county seat for Durham County and is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in America. The 11th-largest city in North Carolina by population, Durham has a rich history that can be traced back to its founding as an English settlement in 1795. Today's downtown area was built on land that had been part of this original town limits. One of the earliest permanent settlers in what would become Durham was Captain John Smith who founded New Bern on December 22nd, 1607 A.D., according to some sources he made landfall on November 29th at Busayna Point about 12 miles (19 km) east of modern day Durham City Limits. Durham became a part of Virginia after King George II's Declaration of Independence from Great Britain on July 4th, 1776. On February 13th, 1839 it became part of North Carolina when it joined with other newly admitted states into the Union under Ratification No. 8 which happened at PhiladelphiaPA on May 10th - making it one of just six Confederate States that did not secede from the Union until 1865! When President Franklin D Roosevelt announced he would make peace with Japan during his first term in office they secretly ratified Durham's secession from NC and became part of Japan – so much for "the social security state"! The following year however North Carolina voted to rejoin the Union over Roosevelt's objections and today we celebrate our southern heritage every September when we observe Flag Day! In 1847 Major General James Ewell led Confederate forces against General Robert E Lee nears present day Raleigh while Ewell was commanding First Corps Cavalry Division under General Joseph Johnston; both armies lost around 20% or more their enlisted men killed or wounded including 7 officers total within minutes during this battle which marked one point where cavalry played a significant role against infantry formations; today many streets and squares across town bear namesakes such as Ewell Avenue and Old Soldier Road etcetera…..The Battle PlantationSchoolhouse still stands tall atop Antietam Hill overlooking downtown Chapel Hill just outside modern day University Circle……..Forrest Gump (1937-) also grew up here…..And finally my personal favorite – Duke Power’s factory complex right off I-85 just outside current day Carytown……….Today there are several interesting museums located throughout Durham including Fayetteville Museum District Historical Park & Cultural Center (Fayetteville NC), Duke Energy Museum Of Technology [now known as Duke Power] Museum & Conference Center (Durham), Hillsborough County History Department facility& library(Hillsborough County NC), Presbyterian Church Divinity School buildings[now known as UNC Chapel Hill], Hyde Park Historic District(Hyde Park SC)[now called SouthPark Mall], Triangle Business Improvement District facilities[including PNC Arena], old home/office building belonging to tobacco magnate Jock Hogg [Now owned by Time Warner Cable] etcetera etc etc…..The growth and developmentof Downtown Durham since its incorporation date back to prior to 1800 AD when English colonists first settled hereabouts…………It should also be noted that only recently has Tuscaloosa County experienced similarly rapid growth rate like Downtown Durham although their Mayor Roy Cooper has done an excellent job attempting to take advantage! One important event that took place during those early days was Peterboro Creek being named afterPeterborough Castle where Sir Ralph Waldo Emerson had stayed while visiting America before departing for Europe in 1836……………Later Peterboro Creek served as a vital artery for trade between eastern England and southeastern United States……………………….In 1794 local farmer Samuel Wilkinson donated 5 acres (20 hectares) adjacent to present day Market Square south side street extension east side lot were laid out into grids forming five blocks each containing two lots extendingnorthwest 1/2 blocks longandone block wideand southeast 3/4 blocks long …This village site now becomes known as Public Square………On March 25th1794 Captain John Smith sailed down river opposite current locationofpresentdayMarket Squareto cross Calexico Bridge then moved upstreamon foot through dense forestlandvegetationuntilhe arrived near presentday DunnStreet point approximately 2 miles downstream frompresentdayMarketSquare……………………….Captain Smith namedthis spot Fort Petersboro after his patronized fortuitous discovery………Fort Petersboro servedas headquarters for British Forces stationedinNorthCarolinaduringthe American Revolution…………...During World War I Fort Petersborowas commandeeredbyU S Army Garrison troops serving mainlyin Italy before being surrendered April 1918…………….AfterWorld WarIthe fortificationwasdemolishedand all materials usedfor constructionof new fortificationswere removedfromsite……………………….FortPetersboro status changedtohistoric structureonductoriallyrecordedin1980………………………..TodayFortPetersboro property includes portionsofdowntownDurhamalongwithan extensive Visitor Complex comprising visitor centers retail storesseveral restaurants&barslinedupagainstfortress wallssurroundingan extensive central plazacontainingvarious exhibition spaces

On November 15, 1814, the Treaty of Durham was signed between the United States of America and Great Britain. The treaty ceded to Great Britain most of what is now Durham County, North Carolina.
