Durham, North Carolina is a large city located in northwestern Durham County, North Carolina. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 122,614. The area that would become Durham was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. In 1795, Englishman John Dunmore established a small town on what is now downtown Durham. By 1800, the town had grown to about 1,000 people and it became known as Dunmore City. In 1819, when Confederate General Robert Ewell decided to retreat from Chancellorsville after suffering heavy losses there, he ordered his men to destroy all evidence of their victory so as not to incriminate themselves. On April 9th 1865 – three days before Union General Ulysses S Grant reached Durham – Confederate Colonel James Longstreet's brigade destroyed all but one building in Dunmore City during an attempted robbery. The only person who was not killed or captured during this rampage was local grocer Elijah Broughton who fled into hiding until after the battle ended. The city experienced significant growth following the end of World War II and has seen continual development since then. In 1971, Duke University began occupying some buildings within City Limits which led to the current name for Durham: "Duke University Area."The most recent major development in downtown Durham took place in 2000 when construction began on what would become One Southcenter Mall and later McCrory Plaza mall both inside of Duke University Area and also near I-85 and US- 11 respectively
