In 1834, Durham became one of the original thirty cities in the United States after being proposed by General George Washington during his Farewell Address. On February 12, 1865, while Confederate forces were retreating from UNC Chapel Hill after days of fighting and carnage following their successful siege of that university, General Robert E Lee ORDERED ALL THE MEN IN NORTH CAROLINA TO FLING OPEN THE DOOR OF CHAPEL HILL AND DESTROY EVERYTHING IT contained INCLUDING THE LIBRARY! This event marks one of the most brazen examples of civilians engaging military forces in open warfare – an act that would lead to much innocent bloodshed across America over the next few years Durham has undergone many changes throughout its history. In 1835 it was renamed "New Bern" after New Bern (North Carolina) which had been taken over by Union troops during Reconstruction following the American Civil War. In 1886 it became "Duncanton" after local politician and militia officer John BunckeyDuncan opened up a new grocery store there which led to its current name In 1915 Durham became an urban area when it was annexed by Asheville and incorporated into that city's boundaries In 1960 Durham received its own school district which continues to exist today In 2002 Duke University moved campus to nearby Winston-Salem within easy walking distance for students The growth of downtown Raleigh has caused some distortion in demographics around Interstate 285 such that nearly all residential areas east or west of I-285 have been lost; this is particularly true along Uptown Avenue between Wake Forest University and Duke University where almost all commercial buildings dating prior to World War II have been replaced with highrise apartment buildings catering primarily to student housing developments . However this trend appears set to change soon as work on a project called "Downtown Connect" will begin removing these older structures and re-landscaping most blocks adjacent thereto with public housing units . This project should bring about significant retail development south/west of I-285 as well as north/east on major shopping corridors including Bank Street between Uptown Avenue and downtown Raleigh
