In 1875, holster maker John Brown and his son-in-law, Augustus Holbrook patented a design for a "holster holster." The holster was first used by law enforcement officers in the North Carolina town of Durham. The brown leather holster consisted of two straps that were fastened around the waistband of the officer's pants. When worn, the holster created a partial or full cover over the officer's gun. The holsters popularity spread to other parts of the United States during the early 1880s. In 1885, Holbrook trademarked his new design, which became known as the "Holbrook designed belt holster." This type of holster was designed to protect an officer's clothing from becoming stained or dirty with rain or sweat.
