Durham, North Carolina is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina and the county seat of Durham County. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Duke University campus in eastern Durham County and is one of the most populous cities in the Carolinas. The area that would become Durham was first settled by Native Americans, who named it "Kiowa" for its high mountain peaks. The English founded what would become Durham in 1795 as part of an effort to expand their holdings eastward from Raleigh into new territory claimed by France. At first, little changed within the limits of present-day Durham; traders and farmers traded with Indian tribes near present-day Hillsborough and Apex counties until British forces destroyed Cherokee Nation's capital at Choctawhatchee Creek in 1810. In 1821, after years of political wrangling between England and America over claims to newly acquired Louisiana Territory, King George III issued a Royal Proclamation setting forth boundaries for each country's possessions on what is now known as East Coast America: Georgia included; Florida excepted (the United States had acquired it from Spain during Mexican–American War); and North Carolina included including present-day Durham County. In crossing this line into America proper for just under two centuries, white European settlers discovered rich deposits of coal and other minerals while African slaves labored to provide food for white colonists living off acreage granted them through various grants or purchase agreements given by Britain to her American colonies during their time as part ofGeorge III's policy known as "Indian removal." Durham became part of Greensboro Township when it was organized under a charter dated February 3, 1868 from portions of Wake County west of Chapel Hill Road inclusive (including current Fayetteville). On December 12th 1870 Census there were 5 inhabitants living in Edgecombe Township which also includes modern day Raleigh with 9 residents when it was organized because all land westward along Chapel Hill Road had been taken up by plantations following Reconstruction much like much today’s map bounded by I-85/I-285 which has served as our official borders since 1957 . This event spelled doom for any town east or north of Chapel Hill Rd., including present day Raleigh downtown where dense growth ensued due to easy access to streetcar lines running south down Prospect Ave & west on Johnston Dr

The first permanent European settlement in what is now Durham was made by John Fenton on July 12, 1692 when he and his brother James founded Fort Fenton on an island in present-day Elizabeth City County as part of a strategic move to gain control over the greater Coastal Plain region. The fort served as a trading post and stopover for travelers on their way northward from South Carolina or Georgia. Fenton's grandson Edward Fenton donated land along both sides of the river for a new town to be named after him and his wife Sarah Dudley>, which became known as "Durham". In 1712, David Dunbar married Anne Hutchinson, daughter of Reverend Jonathan Hutchinson, who had come to America from England with her mother before being driven out by British forces during King George II's War (1714-1718).Dunbar purchased 300 acres (121 hectares) near what is today downtown Durham from Governor Tryon for $2 per acre ($24 per km²). He built himself a huge home there called "Blacksburg" which still stands today within easy walking distance of many shops and restaurants located throughout downtown Durham. David Dunbar also played an important role in starting what would become one of America's largest educational institutions – Duke University – when he generous donation allowed its creation through Act No., 2nd Session of 1802.
