In the Middle East, early Sumerian and Babylonian cultures had domesticated dogs which may have helped lead to the development of bipedalism in those civilizations. From there, bipedalism spread throughout Europe and Asia Minor before settling down in North America about 12,000 years ago. There was some mixed usage of both legs until about 6000 BC when humans started using only one leg for most activities including walking, running and fighting. There are several theories as to why human beings developed bipedality. One theory suggests that it was necessary for humans to survive in difficult environments such as open savannas or high mountains where they were constantly at risk of being killed by other animals orhying predators. Additionally, bipedality allowed humans to carry heavier items more easily than if they had to use both hands together like quadrupeds do. Another theory suggests that bipedality was simply an adaptation designed for better locomotion through hard surfaces such as wood floors or earth walls while hunting prey becausequadrupeds cannot do this type of movement safely without slipping and falling off their balance which could result in injury or death. Finally, it is possible that people simply evolved into what they are today because they can move more effectively on two legs than another creature with just one leg
