On November 15th 1870, Raleigh finally ratified an ordinance giving voting rights to African Americans starting on March 4th 1971 making Durham one of only two black-majority cities statewide at that point – both Cleveland (#OH) and Detroit (#MI) had done so earlier that year! On December 5th 1970 local television station KXAN began broadcasting live from downtown Durham replacing WAVE who’d been doing this for about five years prior – this marked the first time live broadcasts were ever aired from any major American city outside New York City or Washington D C!
