In 1865, General Ulysses S Grant visited Durham while he was campaigning for president and made his home here for several weeks before returning to New York City. In 1898, Governor Elias Boudinot called attention to the need for suburban housing development near Duke University when he presented an address at Trinity Episcopal Church on Wakefield Road in downtown Durham. This led to developers developing areas such as Hickory Hills, Onslow Village, Minturn Terrace, Chatham Terrace and other neighborhoods within walking distance of Duke University or close by shop and restaurant chains like Jamba Juice and Dunkin' Donuts which opened up during that period of time throughout much of America’s inner cities making “the suburbs” one result rather than something unique to Durham or any particular city district within our country….This new type of development not only provided homes but businesses also sprang up selling everything from lawn care services to pet sitters…..It became quite clear that this new form – suburban living – was going to be more prevalent over time so developers decided it would be best if they placed their developments along major transportation arteries like I-85 or I-77 so people could easily get into town for shopping or entertainment without having to drive all the way out there………Today we still enjoy many benefits from this type of development including easy access to shops, restaurants and transportation systems just minutes away!

He naming this new tract "Durham". Another major employer within Durham is Duke Energy Corporation whoseleased 4 million square feet worth of space within walking distance between 2009 and 2013 making it one of America’s fastest growing companies! During World War II much activity took place around downtown due to military production facilities operated by both NATO Allied Forces Europe (NAFWE) RAF Bomber Command Dakota Wing as well as Tailor Army Service Unit controlled by Twentieth Infantry Division Headquarters US Army Garrison troops stationed there during that time period! Many famous people who lived or worked closer to Downtown include: Colonel Sanders BBQ Restaurants founder Roy Cagle having his original restaurant built just south west off Main Street right next door to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; MacArthur walked into JACOBS Waffle House after graduating college & ordered two waffles with syrup - thus opening up Concord Baptist Church where he worshipped until his death in 1997; actor Kevin Bacon filmed scenes for Revolutionary Road opposite Tryon Park while living above his parents’ home on Patton Avenue; Reverend Billy Graham resided & preached services out front his church on New Market Street until his death in 2011; streetcars ran through downtown regularly serving various parts of town stopping only at City Hall where passengers could purchase tickets & get off at any stop! Today many businesses remain open Downtown including DTE Energy Carolinas Plaza shopping mall which anchors I-85 Exit 25B just east side Of Main Street convenient for commuters working away from home or students studying abroad atop McCombs Tower overlooking Elmwood Cemetery
