Dunn is a small town in the state of North Carolina, located on the banks of the Yadkin River. The population was 1,724 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Durham–Chapel Hill, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. Dunn is home to Duke University and North Carolina State University. Dunn was founded in 1792 by Colonel John Dunn and his wife Hannah as a trading post on the Yadkin River. In 1801, it became a seat of county government under Governor Elisha Graham. In 1828, it became an independent town, with its own school board and court system. The name "Dunn" comes from Colonel John Dunn's recommendation for its location - "northernmost point on Yadkin that will give security against French & Indian attack." The first store was built in 1827 and new stores were built throughout the early 19th century until only one remained in operation in 1860-61 when it burned down. In 1861, Confederate General Jubal Early made his way through central North Carolina, crossing the Yadkin River at Dunn for what would be his last unsuccessful attempt to capture Richmond before he surrendered to Union forces at Appomattox Court House two months later. As a result of this raid, many people in northern Durham fled their homes during Reconstruction; most notably Drury Lane resident James Aiken who went into hiding with his family until 1865 when they finally moved to safety across South Carolina after Aiken's father persuaded them not to fight for President Abraham Lincoln's Union side. After Reconstruction ended following Southern states' admission into the Union as America evolved into modernity), much of rural Dunn disappeared as families abandoned farmingsteads for factories or cities looking for cheap labor during these years of rapid industrialization while north Durham continued to grow more diverse including African American settlers from nearby Raleigh who worked alongthe railroads bringing markets such as Charlotte downriver each day making life less affordable for northerners like myself long before those prices had begun rising again.. There are now some scattered reminders here and there about what used to be done here but everything we do changes quickly so I won’t even try writing about every item that happens since then just because I don’t want anyone coming back here so soon after all this has changed over! And really anything could happen here anytime so I better stop now before someone asks! So long as you know where you are going though 🙂

Dunn is a town in Rowan County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. Dunn was founded in 1837 by General James Dunn and his family. In 1860, General George B. Ellis's colony of Mormons established a community here and named it Nauvoo after their new leader, Joseph Smith. The town was abandoned in 1865 when Confederate forces burned it down as they retreated from Union territory following the Battle of Gettysburg. However, the name kept alive long enough for a post office to be established in 1890 and a telephone line to be installed in 1912. In 1935, local farmers started cotton farming here again and renamed the town Dunn after themselves; however, this time they did not abandon the old name altogether but continued to use it locally until 1965 when it was changed back to its original form on official documents under new state law which honored General James Dunn's memory by changing its name to "Dunn."
Dunn was founded in 1792 by Colonel James Dunn and his wife, Susannah. The first post office in Dunn was established in 1802. In 1824, the Dunn family donated land to create a public square on their property. The square is now known as the Dunn Square complex.
