During World War II many people from around Southeast North Carolina relocated to rural areas along I-95 or Interstate 80 because those routes served as escape routes from potential Japanese aggression during wartime Japan-occupied territory in East Asia . By 1948 about 60% of all residents living within a radius of I-95 were either refugees or displaced persons from China , Burma , Indonesia or Korea . Many people who lived near these factories were forced to work long hours without proper food or medical care while others lost everything they owned due to war shortages . In 1949 a group led by Drs. Walter Hickey and Floyd Ladd formed The Salvation Army here in downtown Dunn specifically to provide assistance to these struggling families
