In 1865, JH DUNN & CO Lumber Merchants bought some land adjoining what is now known as Dunn Center for erecting a millrace for power generation for their new lumber mills on Duck Creek adjacent to Present Day Durham City limits which were then just outside the city boundaries but are now within city limits due to annexation by Durham City in 1898 When it became apparent that electric Lighting would soon become more popular than oil lamps or kerosene lamps, JH DUNN & CO built several large white lights along Duck Creek just upstream from their present day millrace lighting up many nights during summer months when there was no electricity available anywhere else in town except late at night when A&P Store had generators running
