Dunn is a town in Granville County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 954 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Winston-Salem, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1853, Dunn's post office was established and named for General James H. Dunn, Jr., who had fought in the Mexican–American War and in the American Civil War as a colonel and brigadier general. The first settlers were two families from Scotland who arrived in 1776 and started to cultivate some land around what is now downtown Dunn on Catawba River. By 1800 their son John had built a log cabin on the site where he would live for almost 60 years until his death in 1859. In 1852, when General James H. Dunn Jr.'s regiment of Confederate troops was sent to assist General Robert Ewing's Union army during the Battle of Franklin (September 12-13), they camped near what is now downtown Dunn on Elkin Creek just west of US 1/9 mile south of present day US 421 four miles east of Raleigh. After Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9 1865, General James H.(Jr.) decided to move his headquarters back to Durham so he could be with his regiment instead of returning home which would have been too dangerous after the war ended without him being able to protect his unit and property. This event made Upper Granville County (now Alamance County) one of only two counties in North Carolina not to secede from the Union during the Civil War; Lower Granville County did so soon after it was organized as Wake County by state legislation following Confederates' surrender). Dunn had its start as a small community consisting mostly of farmers living around Catawba River before it became an incorporated town dated November 7, 1912 within Granville Countys first district following passage by county commissioners thereof providing for "an improvement society" having "a store, postoffice...and other public services". The name change came about because new citizens wanted their town shown up on Official Town Records rather than being listed as "Unincorporated Rural Parish". At that time there were no streets or features within what are now downtown areas such as Hogback Road/US 421 which lead out into rural Buncombe County; those features began appearing relatively early once development proceeded along those corridors later becoming more pronounced with growth throughout portions of central Winston Salem over time including Downtown Mall project spearheaded by Mayor Roy Cooper Sr.. On July 15 1957 incorporation papers were filed with State Board OF Elections disclosing that merchants numbered 95% black males voting at 50% rate while white men made up only 28% registered voters thus making Dunn one-third black majority femalemajority municipality through acts concertedly pursued by Mayor Mrs Cooper especially her husband’s election campaign slogan “One Third Black And One Third White” ploy marketing message further underscoring cultural diversity evident among city’s current residents coming increasingly age demographic reflecting recent waves migration attributable largely due various socio economic factors throughout Baby Boomer period since late 20th century African Americans constitute largest minority group overall 2nd largest concentration under 25 yrs old followed thereafter by Hispanics then Asians also descendantscontinue

The Town Hall is located at 4441 Old Mill Road which is also home to Dunns Day School - one of two public schools in Dunn - as well as several other businesses including Ponderosa Pizza and Joes Pizza which have been around since before World War II.
