Dunn is located in the southeastern corner of North Carolina, bordered by South Carolina to the east and Virginia to the south. The population of Dunn was 1,832 as of 2010. Dunn is a small town with a small school district that serves just over 3,000 students. It is home to one of the few golf courses in North Carolina, as well as several other businesses and services. The first permanent settler in what is now Dunn was James Meeks who arrived on horseback from Georgia in 1811. Meeks built a small cabin near present day Dunn on October 10, 1811. The first post office in what is now Dunn was established on December 5, 1814 by Amos Kendall and named for James Meeks’s cabin. In 1865, John Aiken founded JAG Insurance Company which later became First Union Life Insurance Company and still exists today as an insurance company with headquarters in Dunn. Dunn had its start as a Methodist church site called "Morningside" due to early settlers' concerns about white Protestant missionaries coming to preach Christianity throughout their region while they were living among them during the time period when Methodism was not sanctioned by the state government. On December 7, 1860, Revd Samuel Fenton purchased land at present day Marine Drive and Creek Road for use as a Methodist churchsite addition/new cemetery for his congregation's growing membership in Central Chapel (later known simply as "Morningside"). Reverend Fenton permanently dedicated this site on April 22nd 1861 under the name "Dunn Methodist Church". Reverend Fenton served as pastor at this location until his death on February 17th 1865 at the age of 78 years old after serving for more than 25 years including four terms (1841-1849) as Moderator of Session at Chapel Hill Seminary where he taught moral theology; posthumously becoming an American author and theologian associated with that college fame noted for his popular work "A Commentary upon Romans." At present day Marine Drive & Creek Road are also known locally simply as "Reverend Fenton’s Roads". In 1898 General Electric erected its largest electric generating plant west of the Appalachian Mountains - making it possible for companies like GEICO to offer new rates without worrying about contributing significantly financially to local libraries or churches up against powerful coal interests -thus providing electricity access not only for many people but also jobs directly related thereto! This event helped create both economic development areas around NC&VA coasts responsible for much coastal job growth over ensuing decades – some would say too much so given today's competitive energy markets! Dunn has been noted for its cotton fields, which were one of the most productive areas in the South during the late 19th century and early 20th century. In 1915, when it became part of NC State University, Dunn had an enrollment of 10,000 students and employed more than 500 workers; however by 2000 it had shrunk to fewer than 100 people due to economic reasons. However today there are still several large cotton plantations located around town which continue to produce goods for local residents and export markets around the world.
