Significant events that occurred here include: Dunn also has several contributing factors which have helped make it one of America's most economically prosperous towns today - one being its location within easy commuting distance for many businesses throughout much of Raleigh-Durham; two were its early industrial roots which allowed it to prosper even as other municipalities around it cratered; three were its strong patriotic ties to both Scotland (the home country where many Scotch-Irish immigrants settled) and America which helped contribute to support for U.S.-led World War II efforts here; four include annexation by Durham County in 1928 following a referendum vote conducted largely through mail ballots - making it one of only five towns in North Carolina along with Greensboro (the county seat), Winston-Salem (the state capital), Chapel Hill (a college town adjacent to Durham), and Cary (northwest corner of Wake County) that formed new counties during this time period; five are due directly or indirectly to Interstate 95 - once called "The High Road" because so much commerce passed through here - connecting Raleigh–Durham with points all over southern NC/ southeastern SC via what is now Highway 411; six resulted from mechanization throughout much of these decades which made local jobs obsolete and eventually led some residents to move out into surrounding rural areas – something that has continued unabated since then despite robust job growth elsewhere in town; seven are attributable directly or indirectly to demographic changes brought about by migration from rural Appalachians/ northern whites who had dominated local life for generations towards inner city neighborhoods across much of urban America beginning in earnest during desegregation times back around 1960s − an event largely driven by Choice Schools programs set up by private individuals working with government agencies − although some old timers remain active within their community organizations
Dunn was founded in 1792 by John Dunn and his wife Mary. The town was named for the Dunn family, who were early settlers in the area. In 1846, it became a county seat of Wilson County. By 1865, the population had reached 10,000 people. In 1870, Dunn was renamed for General William Tecumseh Sherman after he won an engagement at Chickamauga Creek.
