Dunn is a town in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Dunn is part of the Durham-Chapel Hill Metropolitan Statistical Area. Dunn was founded in 1772 by General James Robertson as a trading post on the Yadkin River. The name "Dunn"comes from an early settler's Indian name for this area, "Hawningoak". In 1812, Colonel John Cushing established a military post here and named it Fort Cushing in honor of his friend and predecessor in command at that fort, General James Robertson. In 1819, Governor Tryon ordered all public buildings within two miles (3 km) of Raleigh be demolished to make way for the new state capital. Cunningham moved his headquarters here from Fort Fisher to what is now Dunn on December 15th of that year. On January 10th of 1830, Cunningham renamed the town Charlotte after Queen Charlotte Eugenie of England who had recently become queen following her father's death. The first store opened in Dunn on October 6th, 1825 by Averill Caldwells store fronting Second Street between Chapel Hill and Menard Streets (now I-85). It burned down on July 8th, 1886 but was rebuilt shortly afterwards with brick plastered walls and a two story white limestone facade by Jno Waddell & Sons construction company with help from local builder Smeaton & Son (later Dorman Construction Company). The original store building still stands today at 501 E Second St., just east of I-85 South exit 9A
