The town is also known for its production of tobacco products such as cigars and cigarettes. Dunn takes its name from General James A. Dunn, commander of American forces during World War I and II. In his honor, the general’s street address in Dunn is 10th Street North. General Dunn was born on December 16, 1842 in Scotland and immigrated to America at the age of 12 when he and his family were driven out of their home country by sectarian violence. He served throughout World War I as an artilleryman with the 2nd Infantry Regiment (9th Division) stationed in France before being transferred to China in 1918 where he served as commanding officer of an artillery regiment until 1922. After his returnfrom China General Dunn resumed civilian life but his popularity among local farmers led him to become involved with local politics beginning in 1924 when he won election as Mayor of Dunnellon Township with 54% of the vote against two other candidates; setting a precedent which has been followed ever since by mayors seeking office on a partisan basis within their townships or villages .

General James Dunn later moved back to Statesville where he died on May 15th, 1865 after a long life filled with service to his community and country

During the Civil War (1861-1865), the city supported Confederate forces while the rest of North Carolina did not support them. In 1865, after the war ended, Dunn's citizens elected Mayor John Ayer to succeed President Abraham Lincoln. Ayer upheld many of North Carolina's civil rights laws but also deported nearly all of its Mexican immigrants.
